Petticoat commonly refers to the inner garment for women which is also known as skirts, an essential under garment for saree (women wear), which is drapped over the petticoat. But in Indian Petticoat also refers to the tops or baniyan. On the above pic you can see a north indian aunty in baniyan or tops, which is the inner garment over which Chudidhar (Salwar Khameez) or other dresses are used. Not only the girls, even aunties use petticoats to maintain their body-shape and beauty.
